Birka Lamellar Armor

This Birka Lamellar Armor is constructed using multiple 20 gauge steel plates, also known as lamellar scales, which are carefully connected together with strong lacing to form a flexible & protective cuirass. The overlapping plate design allows for movement and coverage, making it both practical and visually striking.

Lamellar armor has a long history and was used across many regions, including Scandinavia. Archaeological discoveries in Birka, Sweden, have shown that this style of birka armor was worn by Vikings, likely influenced by contact with the Byzantine Empire and the Kyivan Rus’. These connections helped introduce lamellar designs into Viking culture, where they were valued for their layered protection and adaptability.

The structure of this lamellar cuirass consists of small steel plates arranged in rows, overlapping each other to create a strong defensive layer. This design helps distribute impact while still allowing the wearer to move more freely compared to rigid armor.
