Description
This riveted chainmail coif is made in the classic style of medieval European armor, providing solid protection for the head, neck, and shoulders. It’s built from durable mild steel rings with a 10 mm inner diameter, each one individually hand-riveted for strength and flexibility. The 16-gauge rings make the coif sturdy yet comfortable to wear, while the natural oiled finish helps prevent rust and keeps its authentic medieval look.
Designed to be worn over a padded arming cap or cloth liner, this coif covers the crown, neck, and shoulders, forming an essential part of any warrior’s defense. Its wide drape gives full coverage without restricting movement, making it suitable for reenactment combat, LARP, or adding authentic style to costumes and displays.
Chainmail coifs were widely used from the 12th to the 14th century by both knights and foot soldiers. During this time, riveted mail became common across Europe because it was stronger and more durable than earlier butted versions. Coifs were often worn under helmets like the nasal helm, great helm, or bascinet, offering an extra layer of flexible protection.
As armor technology advanced, the coif remained an important piece of transitional armor, bridging the gap between padded clothing and early plate armor.
