Description

The Lorica Hamata was the classic chainmail armor worn by Roman legionaries from the 1st century BCE to the 4th century CE. It became famous for its perfect balance of protection, flexibility, and strength, allowing soldiers to march long distances while staying fully prepared for battle.

Unlike the later Lorica Segmentata, which used overlapping metal strips, the Hamata was made of interlinked rings that offered superior movement and easy field repair. Because of its long use through the Republic and early Empire, it remains one of the most iconic Roman armors ever made.

This modern reproduction is built from 9 mm, 16-gauge high-tensile spring steel rings, which are butted together for durability and reduced weight. It follows the authentic Roman pattern with short sleeves and a mid-thigh cut, giving excellent mobility and comfort during long hours of wear. The natural steel finish keeps its historic look while the spring steel wire provides more toughness than regular mild steel.

Uses

  • Historical Reenactments: Ideal for Roman legionary or centurion outfits.

  • LARP: Lightweight and authentic for costume or roleplay.

  • Stage & Film: Perfect for realistic Roman-era performances.

  • Training & Display: Great for museums, collectors, or demonstrations.

Advantages

  • High-tensile spring steel: Stronger and more durable than mild steel.

  • Butted ring construction: Lighter and more affordable than riveted mail.

  • Authentic Roman design: True to historical form and proportions.

  • Flexible and comfortable: Allows natural movement for battle or marching.

  • Natural finish: Classic Roman look with easy maintenance.

Care Instructions

  • Keep in a dry place to prevent rust.

  • After use, wipe with a clean or lightly oiled cloth.

  • Apply a thin coat of oil occasionally to preserve the rings.

  • Avoid long contact with water, sweat, or harsh chemicals.

  • For comfort, always wear over a padded tunic or subarmalis.

Note

Each Lorica Hamata is hand-assembled by skilled artisans using traditional chainmail techniques. Small differences in ring alignment, closure, or finish are normal and add to its handcrafted character.
