Description

Authentic 20 Gauge Steel Construction

The Lorica Segmentata Corbridge Type A is handcrafted from durable 20 gauge mild steel with solid brass fittings and genuine leather straps. The overlapping steel plates give excellent flexibility while keeping the armor with managable weight and comfortable to wear. Adjustable leather straps and brass buckles allow a secure fit, while the articulated shoulder sections move naturally with the body for greater comfort.

Inspired by the Roman Legionaries

The Roman Lorica Segmentata was the famous armor worn by Roman legionaries during the height of the Roman Empire. It first appeared during the reign of Emperor Augustus and became one of the best-known military armors of Ancient Rome.

This design is based on the Corbridge Type A, named after armor pieces discovered by archaeologists in Corbridge, England. These discoveries showed how the overlapping steel bands, brass fittings, and leather straps worked together to create strong yet flexible body protection for Roman soldiers.

The adoption of the this armor showed a massive shift in mass production for the Roman military state. Unlike chainmail, which took countless hours of hand-weaving, the iron plates of the segmentata could be quickly stamped out, assembled, and packed.
However, its flaw lay in intensive maintenance. The dozens of moving brass fittings, external loops, and internal leather straps were constantly prone to snapping or rusting under harsh field conditions.

Designed for Protection & Mobility

This armor uses overlapping horizontal steel plates that move with the wearer. This construction provides good protection while allowing freedom of movement for walking, turning, and raising the arms. Solid brass hinges, hooks, and fittings display the look of original Roman armor, while the genuine leather straps securely connect the steel segments for a reliable fit.

Perfect for Costumes, LARP & Display

This Roman legionary armor is ideal for LARP, cosplay, stage performances, historical displays, museums, educational events, Renaissance fairs, film use, and costume collections. Its historically inspired design and comfortable construction make it a standout piece for anyone interested in Roman military history.

Care Instructions

  • Wipe clean with a soft, dry cloth after use.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from moisture.
  • Apply a light coat of oil occasionally to protect the steel.
  • Check the leather straps and brass fittings regularly to keep them in good condition.

This armor arrives with a light protective coating of oil to help prevent rust during shipping and storage. Wipe off the oil before first use or display.

Note: Each Lorica Segmentata Corbridge Type A is individually handcrafted by skilled hands. Minor variations in the steel finish, brass fittings, and leather parts are natural and make every piece unique.
