10th Century Norse Viking Bronze Buckle (Fits 1.5 cm Belts)

Description

This beautifully detailed Viking bronze buckle pays respect to 10th-century Norse craftsmanship. It was cast using the lost-wax technique and replicates period-authentic openwork motifs found on warrior, merchant, and seafarer belts. The intricate interlacing beast forms are reminiscent of the formidable Borre and Urnes designs found in Viking metalwork, when serpents and legendary monsters were entwined as ornaments and protective symbols.

Bronze belt fittings of this type were found in graves throughout Scandinavia, particularly among high-status individuals. Such buckles, which were frequently connected to leather belts worn over tunics or cloaks, proclaimed identification, allegiance, and craftsmanship in addition to their functional use. This piece, with its 1.5 cm fitting width, is suitable for thinner Viking-style belts used with pouches or sword frogs.
