Description
The Great Helm was one of the most important helmets of the High Middle Ages. It first appeared in the late 12th century, during the time of the Crusades, when knights needed stronger protection against heavy weapons. Earlier helmets protected only parts of the head, but this new design fully covered the face and skull.
During the 13th century, this helmet became popularly used in Europe. Its tall and enclosed shape gave excellent protection. Over time, the design evolved from flat topped cylinders to slightly rounded or pointed tops, which helped in deflecting blows more effectively. By the mid-to-late 14th century, the helmet was then replaced on the battlefield by lighter helmets like the bascinet, though it remained popular for tournaments, ceremonies, and display.
This helmet has the same cylindrical shape called the bucket helm, closely associated with the Templar helmet style worn by Crusader knights. It has the look of a templar knight helmet and the strong presence of a crusader helmet, for showing power, faith and status. As a great helm helmet, it represents one of the most recognizable shapes of medieval warfare.
Handmade from 16-gauge mild steel, this helmet has a bright polished finish that makes it better at durability as well as easy to spot on the battlefield, and also has a striking look for display. The steel completely encloses the head, and gives complete coverage.
Inside, a leather suspension liner with an adjustable chin strap and buckle helps balance the helmet’s weight and makes it comfortable to wear for long periods. Weighing approximately 3.9 kg, the liner distributes the weight properly, so it reduces strain during use. This helmet is ideal for LARP, theatre, stage performances, historical displays, and costume use. It is not intended for live combat.
Whether worn as part of a medieval kit or displayed as a centerpiece, this Great Helm brings a strong historical character and dramatic presence.
