Description
The bascinet became the defining helmet of the late 13th and 14th centuries, replacing earlier great helms as the preferred choice of knights and soldiers across Europe. Its pointed profile was specifically engineered to deflect sword strikes and arrows, while the addition of a hinged klappvisor provided superior face protection without sacrificing breath ability or vision.
This reproduction of 16 gauge captures the form and function of the 14th-century visored bascinet. The visor is pivoted on side rivets, allowing it to be lifted when not in combat. A row of holes ensures proper airflow, while the narrow eye slits provide balanced protection and visibility. The surface has been polished to a clean steel finish, closely resembling historical examples preserved in European armouries.
Inside, the helmet is fitted with a hand-stitched, adjustable leather liner and chin strap, ensuring comfort and security during wear. Its historically accurate shape allows it to be worn over an arming cap or a mail coif, just as medieval knights would have done for additional padding and defense.
Whether displayed as a centerpiece in a collection, used for theatrical purposes, or worn in controlled combat scenarios, this Visored Bascinet Helmet showcases the craftsmanship andvtradition of the Middle Ages.
