Description
Take yourself back to the age of knights with these 14th Century Hourglass Gauntlets, a style that became highly popular during medieval Europe’s Gothic period. With their wide flared cuffs and fully articulated build, hourglass gauntlets quickly became the preferred hand protection for knights, warriors, and men-at-arms of the late 1300s.
Made from strong 16-gauge mild steel, these hourglass gauntlets feature overlapping finger plates (called lames) that are riveted securely to a flexible leather base. This articulated construction ensures not only solid protection but also excellent finger movement, allowing you to keep a reliable grip on swords, axes, or shields during training, reenactments, or live combat demonstrations.
The flared “hourglass” cuffs are more than just elegant—at 1.5 kg weight, they are highly functional. Their shape helps deflect blows away from the wrist and forearm, improving greatly on the older mitten-style designs. The inside of each cuff is finished with a black anti-corrosion treatment, giving lasting defense against rust and moisture, even with frequent use.
For comfort and authenticity, each gauntlet comes with stitched red leather backing and a soft suede glove lining inside. A leather palm strap keeps the gauntlet snug and secure, giving you better stability during movement or combat.
These hourglass gauntlets are a perfect balance of historical accuracy, Gothic-era design, and practical battlefield use. Whether you’re a reenactor, a LARP participant, or a collector of medieval armour, they make an impressive and functional addition to your kit.
Care Instructions
-
Clean after use: Wipe with a soft, dry cloth to remove sweat, fingerprints, or moisture.
-
Prevent rust: Apply a thin layer of oil to all steel surfaces, especially on joints and finger lames.
-
Storage: Keep in a dry, ventilated place. Wrap in cloth or store inside a canvas/leather gear bag.
-
Leather care: Condition the inner suede glove and red leather backing occasionally to prevent cracking.
-
Avoid water exposure: These gauntlets are not waterproof. If wet, dry them immediately and reapply oil.
-
Check rivets: Inspect all articulation points regularly to ensure rivets stay tight and flexible. Avoid forcing stiff joints.
Note: Because these Hourglass gauntlets are handmade, small variations in rivets, finish, or shape may occur, giving each pair a unique character.
