Description
This 9th-10th century Viking Bronze Tortoise Brooch is an exact replica of the domed brooches used by Norse ladies throughout Scandinavia and the Viking era. These round brooches, commonly found at burial sites like as Birka, Hedeby, and Jorvik, were vital dress accessories used to fasten the apron-style overdress, which was usually worn in pairs.
This Viking Bronze Tortoise Brooch is crafted in solid bronze and includes an elaborate gripping-beast design intertwined with snake and knotwork patterns in high relief, which are characteristics of Norse creativity. The gently convex body is raised over an internal pin with a secure catch plate arrangement, much like previous findings.
Worn by Viking women of status, these Viking Bronze Tortoise Brooches were not only functional but carried cultural and symbolic value but sometimes containing tools, chains or amulets hung between paired fibulae. Whether for historical clothing, Norse acts or display, this piece reflects authentic late Viking Age craftsmanship.
