Description

This hand-cast solid bronze horse-head brooch, inspired by 10th-century artefacts discovered at Birka, captures the essence of Viking Scandinavian culture. Originally worn by Norse women as an apron or cloak brooch, the stylised equine design represented rank, geographical identification, and craft skill.

Each piece is hand-sculpted from wax using the traditional lost-wax method. Molten bronze replaces the wax, keeping every detail in the finished casting. This yields a brooch rich in texture, depth, and individuality—each one subtly different.

The horse-shaped symbol, stylised with flowing manes and interlacing patterns, was frequently associated with fertility, passage between realms, and divine protection. Vikings used such emblems to express both rank and spiritual conviction.

Bronze brooches like this were more than functional fasteners in the Viking Age, they served as wearable statements of craftsmanship, identity, and wealth. The horse motif appears in saga art and burial contexts, embodying endurance, status, and a bond with the natural world

Ideal for authentic Norse dress or display, the brooch fastens securely with its rigid pin, perfect for linen, wool, or traditional garb.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Clean with a soft, dry cloth

  • Avoid chemical cleaners, prolonged moisture or salt exposure

  • Store in a dry pouch or display box to preserve surface patina

  • Light wax or mineral oil may be applied occasionally—no abrasive polishing

MEASUREMENTS: (approx.)

  • Length: 5 cm
  • Width: 3 cm

NOTE:

Each brooch is individually casted with lost wax cast technique therefore, minor variations in color, texture or casting detail may be present.
