Description
This 14th century bascinet helmet is a visored bascinet, also known as the pig-faced bascinet or Hundsgugel, is a helmet that was used widely in Europe in the 14th and the 15th century. It evolved from the earlier skullcap (cervelliere) and became popular due to its better face protection and visibility.
The defining feature of this great bascinet helmet is its elongated, pointed visor, which helps in deflecting blows from swords and arrows. The sloping shape helped redirect impact away from the face, while the ventilation holes were ideal for easy breathing. Sometimes around the lower edge, the bascinets had attachment points to attach chainmail aventails for neck and shoulder protection.
This Medieval bascinet helmet is handcrafted from mild steel and is available in 14 gauge and 16 gauge options, so that you can choose visored helmet based on your need and preference.
- 14 Gauge Steel: This is thicker and heavier, therefore can be used for controlled combat, armored training where higher impact resistance is needed.
- 16 Gauge Steel: Lighter and more comfortable, ideal for LARP, stage performances, costumes, theatre use and display, it gives an authentic look with easier wear for long hours.
The 14th century bascinet helmet has a fully padded internal liner that helps balance the weight (approx. 3.9 kg), and gives the wearer comfort and stability. This helps prevent chafing from plate armor and also is soft to stay on the head. A leather chin strap with buckle keeps the helmet secure during movement and can be adjusted.
Each pig face helmet is polished to a bright steel finish, this gives it more durability and a striking historical look. To protect the steel during shipping, the helmet arrives lightly coated with oil, this should be wiped clean before use.
Whether worn with chainmail and armor or displayed as a centerpiece, this bascinet represents a key stage in medieval helmet evolution.
