Description
The Spangenhelm is one of the most famous helmets of the early medieval age, used from the 6th to 11th centuries by warriors across Europe. The name comes from the German word “Spange,” meaning metal strip, describing its design made of several steel plates joined by strong bands. This clever construction made the helmet light yet sturdy, giving great protection against swords, arrows, and other blows.
The rounded, cone-shaped top of the Spangenhelm was built to deflect hits from above or the sides, lessening the force of impact. The nasal guard protected the face without blocking vision, making it a practical choice for both soldiers on foot and cavalry riders.
Inside, the helmet has a soft, adjustable leather liner that adds comfort and keeps it steady while worn. The liner helps to absorb shocks, balance the weight, and ensure a snug fit during battle or reenactment. It also reduces pressure on the head, making it easier to wear for long periods.
Made from 18-gauge mild steel, this helmet offers excellent durability and strength while weighing around 1.8 kilograms it is perfect for display, LARP, or historical combat.
It also features a leather chin strap with a brass buckle to hold the helmet securely in place during movement.
