Description
The German Sallet Helmet stands as one of the most iconic helmets of the late Middle Ages, widely worn across European battlefields during the 15th century. Originating in Germany, the sallet helmet quickly became the preferred headgear of both knights and infantry thanks to its exceptional balance of protection, vision, and mobility.
This reproduction faithfully reflects the classic design, crafted entirely from mild steel and available in 14 or 16 gauge thickness. The helmet has a rounded skull cap with a pivoting visor, shaped with a wide horizontal eye-slit for visibility. At the rear, its elegant flared tail extends downward to shield the back of the head and neck, offering superior protection without sacrificing comfort.
Inside, a stitched padded liner cushions the wearer and evenly distributes the helmet’s weight, making it comfortable for long term use. A leather chin strap with buckle keeps it secure during combat reenactments, SCA events, LARP battles, or stage performances.
Historically, sallet helmets were often paired with a bevor to cover the chin and throat, making them one of the most versatile and effective helmets of the medieval period. This reproduction is not only functional but also a tribute to the refined craftsmanship of German armourers, blending elegance with battlefield practicality.
