Description
During the late 1300s, the hounskull bascinet helmet emerged as a defining element of knightly armor. Named after its distinctive protruding “hound’s snout” visor, it provided a significant step forward from open-face helms—offering far better protection for the face while preserving the wearer’s ability to breathe and see in combat.
This bascinet helmet replicates that iconic form with precision and durability. Crafted by hand from mild steel, this helmet is offered in two thickness options:
-
14 Gauge (1.8 mm): More substantial and protective; weighs approx. 3.28 kg, ideal for full-contact or display use.
-
16 Gauge (1.6 mm): Lighter and easier to wear; weighs approx. 2.5 kg, suitable for extended wear or lighter combat scenarios.
Its hinged snout visor lifts up smoothly and locks in place for combat readiness or visibility. Vision slits and a pattern of ventilation holes enhance function without compromising the sleek silhouette of the helm. The pointed top design helps glance off blows, staying true to historical shaping used during the Hundred Years’ War.
Inside, the helmet is fitted with a quilted cotton liner supported by an adjustable leather harness to create a snug and stable fit. A leather chin strap with brass buckle ensures security whether worn during battle or displayed on a stand.
This bascinet helmet brings 14th-century warfare to life—combining formidable aesthetics with authentic function for reenactment, collection, or combat.
