Description
By the Late Medieval period (14th–15th century), belts had become more than just practical items, they were important fashion accessories that reflected status, taste, and regional style. Unlike the broader, weapon-supporting belts of earlier centuries, narrow belts became increasingly popular during this period, particularly for civilian dress. These slimmer belts were used to cinch tunics and gowns, suspend purses and chatelaines, or carry small daggers and everyday tools.
The rectangular plate buckle with dotted star-like decoration and a rounded frame, such as this one, is a style frequently uncovered in archaeological finds from across Europe. The punched geometric design was both decorative and practical, as it could be produced quickly and consistently with metal tools, reflecting the mass production of personal fittings in urban workshops during this period.
Such buckles would have been worn by both men and women. On men’s attire, they often secured narrow girdle belts, sometimes with decorative mounts, while for women they were used with long gown-belts, often hanging low at the hips as part of fashionable 14th–15th century dress. Surviving manuscript illustrations and effigies frequently show this style of narrow-belt buckle in use.
The included rivets and washers mirror how these buckles were originally attached to leather straps, offering not just convenience but also historical accuracy in construction. The polished brass replicates the bright, golden look that Late Medieval wearers valued, as gilt and polished fittings were often used to show wealth and refinement.
Whether for living history, reenactment, or medieval craft projects, this brass buckle captures the balance of function and style that defined everyday dress accessories of the later Middle Ages. It is a small but significant detail that brings accuracy and authenticity to any kit.
