Description
The Lorica Hamata was the standard chainmail shirt worn by Roman legionaries from the 1st century BCE through the 4th century CE. Favored for its balance of protection, flexibility, and durability, it allowed soldiers to march long distances while still being battle-ready.
Unlike the later Lorica Segmentata, which used metal strips, the Lorica Hamata’s interlinked rings provided superior flexibility and required less specialized repair in the field. Its long service history made it one of the most iconic armors of the Roman army, especially during the Republic and early Empire periods.
This reproduction is made from 9 mm 16 gauge high tensile butted rings, which provide strength and resilience while keeping the weight manageable. Its short sleeves and mid-thigh cut follow Roman design, ensuring mobility in combat and comfort during long wear.
The natural finish keeps the armor historically accurate, while the use of spring-high tensile wire gives it extra durability compared to standard mild steel.

Not: Each Lorica Hamata is meticulously handcrafted, link by link, from thousands of interlinked rings, delivering exceptional historical accuracy, strength, and unmistakable artistry of traditional methods.
As each piece is assembled entirely by hand, you may occasionally notice a rivet that sits slightly proud, feels subtly looser than others, or even a missing ring. Such small variations are a natural hallmark of genuine, artisan-made mail, just as in the Middle Ages, and reflect the human care invested. Any adjustment, if desired, can be easily made using basic pliers and a spare ring, preserving both integrity and historical authenticity.
