Description
Roman Subarmalis Quilted Cotton Armor Vest – Dual Layered
The Roman subarmalis was the silent guardian worn beneath armor by legionaries, centurions and gladiators. This faithful reproduction shows the padded garment used under lorica segmentata, hamata, or squamata to absorb impact and prevent chafing from metal armor.
Inspired by historical sources, this Subarmalis has a dual-layer quilted cotton padding that gives shock absorption with being comfortable for long hours of wear. It is crafted from 100% cotton canvas for strength and longevity during active use.
It has shoulder guards and skirt-style strips, known as pteryges, for additional protection to the upper arms and thighs. They give the vest its Roman look with flexibility for combat, performance, or display. Side lacing gives a secure, adjustable fit, making the garment suitable for layering over a tunic or beneath armor.
Historically, the subarmalis roman served as a buffer between the body and heavy equipment. This reproduction stays true to that purpose, the quilted structure functions as effective padded amour, distributing the force of impact with mobility, and also serves as a reliable padded amor for LARP, light combat and stage use.
Designed for LARP, theater, film, or historical impressions, this subarmalis balances historical accuracy with modern use, making it a reliable foundation for Roman military kits and collections.
