Forged in the echoes of Rome’s great legions, the Roman Subarmalis stood as the silent guardian beneath the soldier’s armor. Worn by legionaries, centurions, and even gladiators, it was more than a padded vest, it was the unseen shield that absorbed the force of enemy blows and spared warriors from the cruel bite of iron and bronze. Its quilted body and protective skirt strips, or pteryges, gave the wearer both freedom of movement and a commanding presence on the battlefield. Today, this faithful recreation of Roman Subarmalis allows modern warriors, enthusiasts, and dreamers to step into the sandals of Rome’s finest, carrying forward a tradition of resilience and valor into every LARP, SCA battle, or stage performance.
This Roman Subarmalis is a faithful reproduction of the padded under-armor vest worn by Roman soldiers and gladiators. Historically, the subarmalis acted as a protective buffer, softening the blows of combat and preventing chafing from heavy metal armor.
This Roman Subarmalis is made from 100% quilted cotton canvas with a double-layered construction, offering comfort, breath ability, and dependable padding for long wear. The addition of shoulder guards and skirt-style strips (pteryges) enhances mobility and protection while giving the garment its distinct Roman appearance.
The side lacing provides a customizable fit, ensuring that the subarmalis can be comfortably worn over a simple tunic or beneath lorica. With its reinforced stitching, two layers of padded quilting, and hand-finished details, this piece is designed for both durability and authenticity.
Perfect for LARP, SCA combat, or stage and film productions, this Roman Subarmalis delivers both historical accuracy and modern practicality.
