Description
Embrace the spirit of the Viking Age with this hand-cast bronze cloak clasp, offered in three striking forms: Serpent, Raven, and Wolf. Each design draws from authentic Norse symbolism, echoing the legendary creatures of Scandinavian lore. Such clasps served as both practical fasteners and powerful status emblems.
-
Serpent Heads represent transformation and the deep mysteries of sea and myth, inspired by the mighty Jörmungandr.
-
Raven Heads channel the divine insight of Odin’s twin birds, Huginn and Muninn—symbols of memory, thought, and prophecy.
-
Wolf Heads recall the raw ferocity of Fenrir or Odin’s loyal beasts, Geri and Freki—guardians of strength, loyalty, and primal force.
At the heart of each clasp lies the ancient lost-wax casting method, also known by its Latin name cire perdue. This technique begins with a detailed wax model of the clasp, hand-sculpted to include the smallest ridges and scales of the animal heads. The wax is encased in a heat-resistant mold. When fired, the wax melts and leaves a hollow cavity. Molten bronze is then poured into the void, capturing every contour of the original wax sculpture.
This labor-intensive process—unchanged since the Viking and Roman eras—ensures that no two clasps are exactly alike. Subtle nuances in form and patina speak to the individuality and historical integrity of each piece. The final result is a richly textured fastener that fuses durability with authentic design.
The twisted shaft reflects Norse decorative tradition, often seen in brooches and fittings, while the triple-hole ends allow for easy stitching onto heavy woolen cloaks or linen robes. Whether you are assembling a warrior’s travel gear or a noble’s ceremonial attire, this clasp is a centerpiece of any Viking kit.
