Description

Step back into the era of the Crusades with this authentic Teutonic Knights surcoat, a calf-length tunic modeled after the garments worn by medieval crusaders. Crafted from sturdy cotton fabric, it features a straight cut with long side slits from the waist down, along with additional slits at the center front and back to provide excellent freedom of movement in combat or reenactments.

On the chest is the black cross of the Teutonic Order, a timeless symbol of loyalty, faith, and knightly brotherhood. First appearing in the 12th century, the tabard (also called surcoat, surcote, or Wappenrock in German) was worn over plate or chainmail armour to protect knights from the sun while serving as a powerful identifier on the battlefield.

Throughout the Crusades, tabards became an important part of a knight’s attire, helping warriors to distinguish friend from foe in the chaos of combat. The Teutonic Knights, much like the Templars and Hospitallers, adopted the cross-adorned surcoat as both functional military clothing and a symbol of their holy order.

The widespread use of these tunics is well-documented in medieval manuscripts and illustrations, such as the Morgan Bible (Maciejowski/Crusader Bible, 13th century) and the Codex Manesse (14th century), highlighting their importance across Europe.

With its simple cut and authentic design, this Teutonic Knights surcoat is ideal for reenactments, LARP, SCA events, stage productions, or historical collections. For a truly authentic look, pair it with a leather belt and wear it over chainmail or plate armour.
