These joined sleeves make perfect protection for your arms when you want to wear chainmail sleeves without actually overburdening yourself with a full chainmail shirt under your cuirass. It has a convenient design popular in the 14th and 15th centuries and was commonly used by men at arms or even foot soldiers wearing cuirass and brigandine to avoid being encumbered by the weight of their armour.
